Transcending Boundaries: an evening of art-science
9.4.2024 / 16.00 / Tekstin talo, Helsinki
Join us for an enlightening in-person conversation as part of the Climate & Death 2024 program! “Transcending Boundaries: an evening of art-science” is a conversation curated and moderated by Ines Montalvao, a multidisciplinary creative and Program Director at Artists with Evidence.
It will take place in the heart of Helsinki at Tekstin Talo on Tuesday, 9 April at 16.00-17.30 local time.
The guests joining the conversation are post-disciplinary artist and researcher Mari Keski-Korsu, activist Ainu Kyrönseppä who is also co-founder of Operaatio Arktis, interdisciplinary artist Eeva-Liisa Puhakka and Research Professor Raisa Mäkipää.
In this engaging discussion, we'll explore diverse themes including mortality and the evocative sense of smell, the enigmatic depths of permafrost, and the delicate balance of the Arctic ecosystem. Join us as we delve into the intricate dynamics of multispecies interactions, the multifaceted challenges of climate change mitigation efforts, and the fascinating processes of decay. Don't miss this enlightening conversation!
This event is free of charge and does not need registration. The program for Climate & Death 2024 is collectively organized by the Safer Climate network (University of Helsinki), Artists with Evidence, Tunne Ry and the Finnish Death Studies Association.
You are also welcome to join the in-person seminar on 8 April. Please register here no later than 28.3.
Speakers
Mari Keski-Korsu
Mari Keski-Korsu is a post-disciplinary artist and researcher who explores macro-level manifestations of the ecological polycrisis. Her work is based on multispecies collaborations and the medium of expression is a hybrid combination of participatory performance, visual and live art. Her practice involves intuitive interspecies communication, hydrobodily care and walking methodology to explore empathy within ecosystems. She is a doctoral researcher pursuing a Doctor of Arts degree in Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Department of Art and Media. Her artistic research focuses on multispecies ritualisations in change in the (sub)Arctic Tornio River Valley and she is an artist member in an interdisciplinary research group working in Abisko Scientific Research Station in the Access Abisko program. Mari’s works have been exhibited internationally for the past 20 years in festivals, galleries, museums and outskirts. She has been collaborating with Bioart Society for a decade and worked as an artistic director of Pixelache festival.
Eeva-Liisa Puhakka
Eeva-Liisa Puhakka is an interdisciplinary artist who works in practices that include olfactory art, installations, sculptures, sound and text. Themes in her works are the investigation of human and animal dependence, rural depopulation, smells, and bio-based materials. She also works regularly in a curatorial/production role.
Her practice that penetrates into our awareness through the senses is actually based on basic concepts like the mutual awareness of the different species that she advocates, a meaning of time that goes through the world of different species, an understanding of life and death, and the expression of different emotions.
Ainu Kyrönseppä
Ainu Kyrönseppä is one of the media coordinators and co-founders of Operaatio Arktis. They have a background in film, in performance art and in direct action.
“Through art I am able to tell stories about reality, especially when that reality is difficult to understand, when it feels unreal or inhuman.” For Ainu, the most important thing is still clarifying the language of closed communities and creating interesting and meaningful content.
Raisa Mäkipää
Research professor Raisa Mäkipää (at National Resources institute Finland, LUKE) has wide expertise on ecosystem modeling, carbon and nutrient cycling and biodiversity. She has applied stable isotope analyses and gas flux measurements in her studies on functioning of decomposing fungi and their resource use strategies
Raisa Mäkipää has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, two books and numerous other articles. She has coordinated multidisciplinary projects focused on optimization of ecosystem management and mitigation of climate change.
